Alternate Play Draw Rule in a Grand Prix Trial

GPTs aren't listed in Magic Tournament Rules 2.2 Paragraph 3. Does this mean at GPT top 8 you use a random method to determine Play/Draw?

2.2 Paragraph 3

In certain Premier tournament playoff matches (Magic: The Gathering World Championship, World Magic
Cup, World Magic Cup Qualifiers, Pro Tour, Pro Tour Qualifier, Regional Pro Tour Qualifier, Preliminary Pro
Tour Qualifier, and Grand Prix), a different play/draw rule is used. In these playoff matches, the player that was
ranked higher in the Swiss rounds chooses either to play first or to play second in the first game of each match.
For the second and subsequent games, the loser of the previous game decides whether to play first in the next
game. This alternate play/draw rule may be used in other tournament playoff matches. If used, this must be
announced prior to the start of the tournament.

The default is to use a random method, yes. But if you want, you can use the alternate method. Just be sure to announce it in your player meeting.

Yes, a random method is even the default, unless you announced the Swiss play/draw rule prior to the start of the event.

Edit: 23 seconds late…

The same goes for any other competitive level event that's not specifically listed in MTR 2.2, right? SCG IQ, TCG player events, etc. If it's not specifically announced at the beginning of the tournament, we must adhere to a random method. I find myself having to educate players about this, because they seem to expect the modified play/draw rule at ALL competitive level events.

Edit: clarifying extension

Alternate Play Draw Rule in a Grand Prix Trial

Most (if not all) of the players I've come into contact with at competitive
level events expect the swiss rankings to determine the play/draw. I think
that it has become so ingrained in the player mentality that it should be
officially codified.

I second Mr. McCurley. Is there a reason we would NOT want to do that for all competitive level events with swiss rounds?

This has been changed correct? Its by default the alternative Play Draw rule, right?

Correct. I guess we need to find a better name for it than, “alternate,” now that it is the default.

MTR 2.2

In playoff matches, a different play/draw rule is used. In playoff matches, the player that was ranked higher in the Swiss rounds chooses either to play first or to play second in the first game of each match. For the second and
subsequent games, the loser of the previous game decides whether to play first in the next game.

Yes, it has.

“Playoff play/draw rule” seems to cover it, since it's now the default for all playoff matches.

The MTR does not make a distinction of REL about it.

Extracted from the Magic Tournament Rules (Section 2.2 “Play/Draw Rule”):

«In playoff matches, a different play/draw rule is used. In playoff matches, the player that was ranked higher in the Swiss rounds chooses either to play first or to play second in the first game of each match. For the second and subsequent games, the loser of the previous game decides whether to play first in the next game.»

Remember that the MTR is for Competitive and Professional REL; we're still anxiously awaiting a similar document specifically for Regular REL.

Scott, you ninny, you're getting Regular and Casual All mixed up, again.

Or: ignore that. MTR does apply at Regular REL.
