This is a tricky ruling I had to make last night at FNM. I just wanted to make sure I got it correct.
Active player attacking with Ash Zealot.
Defending player blocks with Cartel Aristocrat then sacrifices a spirit token to give Protection from Red.
Active player responds by casting Skullcrack, targeting the defending player.
I ruled that after Skullcrack resolved, when combat damage was dealt, the Cartel Aristocrat's protection failed to prevent the damage and it was placed in its owner's graveyard.
702.15e. Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.
Card Name: Skullcrack
Mana Cost: 1R
Types: Instant
Card Text: Players can't gain life this turn. Damage can't be prevented this turn. Skullcrack deals 3 damage to target player.
'Can't' always overrules ‘can’ or ‘is,’ right?
