Stamping Basic Lands

Hello there,

a store owner came to me with this question:
“Can I stamp the basic lands of my store for drafts and prereleases?”

This TO told me that he has the issue that he is running out of lands because players take excessive amounts of them when they build their decks for limited events, but they do not return the ones that they do not use.

I haven't found anything about that.

Is it ok to do that?

As long as they push through the card (assuming these are just like the little felt ink stampers you can buy which wouldn't be a problem) then I don't see it being much different to stamping GP product.

I don't think there's anything wrong, but I don't think it would benefit the TO in any way either. In fact, it would take a lot of time. Lands that players bring home tend to just get left at home and forgotten or thrown away. So it's unlikely the TO will see players playing casual games with stamped land be able to demand it back. In fact, if the TO did that, it would create a bad atmosphere.

Perhaps you could suggest this as an approach - at the end of a draft/sealed event, the players must hand in their basic lands in order to collect their prizes. Combine that with announcements to return lands because the shop is running low and it should help a lot.

Nothing wrong from a tournament perspective with marking (the fronts of) cards like that; not really any different than a signature or the like.

As others said, what legal claim the TO has to the cards afterward might be tricky, but that's not really a tournament issue.

I've seen stores have a “deposit” of $2 or so to cover borrowing land in limited events, which gets returned when the lands get returned. Something like that may be able to work depending on your store. And don't forget to just mention to players when they drop or in the last round that borrowed land should be returned.

The TO can also buy basic land from their distributor (at least I think
so) as none are provided free of charge anymore with the Prerelease
product. This should not be too much of a financial drain for the TO. In
fact occasionally it is a good idea to refresh land stock as they do get
marked in time during play. In my experience players usually have tons
of spare land they obtain over time you could ask them to bring some in.

At our store it is sufficient to remind the players at the end of the tournament to return their basic lands. Ususally, this announcement leads to a bee nest-like noise and everyone searches his deck for basics and returns them :)

The owner of one of my local stores marks every land with the store's
initials. She originally did it to encourage people to give back the land,
but she also enjoys seeing the lands she's marked in winning decks at
events :)

You'd be surprised how much that box of each land type costs (and you really need to have each land type, so we're talking at least 5 boxes) and how quickly they disappear if unattended.

Personally, I prefer the “please turn these in at the end” announcement before and after Swiss rounds as a friendly reminder that they are borrowing these lands if they didn't provide their own.

At my LGS we make it a point to say in our opening announcements that there are lands for you to borrow but you must give them back. Then after the event before prizes are given we remind them to return the lands or they are not getting prize. It works out ok. There is still some shrinkage but not as much as it used to be.

Alternatively, you can ask the players to donate some lands - several players probably have a stack at home they're not using, and will be more than happy to do so.

Then perhaps WOTC could consider providing TOs a free box occasionally
if they are expensive? I admit I have never purchased any so dont know
the prices.

Thank you all for your responses.

I have passed all your advices to the TO, so that he can consider which one is the most suitable for him.

What do you think about offering some discount for players who bring basic lands to the store?
Something like “for every X lands you bring, you save $N on the event price”.

If the store does their land I think it would be okay. If not you run the risk of players taking home and bringing back the stores land

At pre-releases especially, I usually include an announcement before the last round of swiss about returning lands when the tournament is over. This past weekend however, I went to make that announcement and the TO actually said not to worry about it. He said they had plenty and he wasn't concerned if some disappeared.

I agree that stamping sounds fine, but extremely time consuming.
