GP Trial and Top 8

Hello,

I wanted to know if a top 8 for a GP Trial is mandatory ?

I just found this ressource that say it is :

http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Events.aspx?x=mtg/event/grandprix/strasbourg14/trials

Is this the official document ?

It's hosted on the Wizards site - albeit the archived old version. Nothing has changed to the format of a GPT. Elimination rounds (top 4 or 8) are required.

GPTs have fact sheets, which are rules to be followed just like official documents are. In fact, where an official fact sheet deviates from the documents, follow the fact sheet for that tournament. For GPTs with the Sealed Deck format and 9-16 players, we can choose between Booster Draft and going on with the same Sealed Decks for the single elimination portion, and in either case there has to be 4 swiss rounds feeding into a top 8.

I am not super happy about this. If we run Booster Draft, there obviously has to be a top 8. If we run Sealed Deck though, I'd love to be able to run 5 swiss rounds feeding into a top 4. In fact, the optimal thing would be 4 swiss rounds into top 4 if 9-12 players, and 5 swiss rounds into top 4 if 13-16 players.

I second this sir, My only change is I would make it 8-12 players play 4 rounds swiss and cut to top 4. No reason for such a drastic change from 8 players to 9 players. Easier to budget time and space for as a TO and definitely easier for players to plan their day.

up (official answer needed, please):

i saw these documents sheet :

http://magic.wizards.com/en/protour/pptqvan15 where we saw that top 8 is mandatory

and

http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/grand-prix-trials-event-types-events where we saw that MTR are the documents to follow ( with top not mandatory).

Had the rules changed ? The top 8 is not mandatory anymore for GPT ?

Thank you for answering, my TOs really don't like Top 8 :)

Specific premier event FAQ sheets can have requirements that supersede the MTR.

The MTR states (emphasis mine):

Originally posted by MTR 10.4:

For Premier Events, the playoff options above are required, not optional.

Premier Events include the following events: Magic: The Gathering World Championship, World Magic Cup,
World Magic Cup Qualifiers, World Magic Cup Qualifier Trials, Pro Tour, Pro Tour Qualifier, Regional Pro
Tour Qualifier, Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier, Grand Prix, Grand Prix Trial, WPN Premium Tournament, and
WPN Premium Qualifier.

It can be inferred from this that playoffs are required.

Edit: see Andy's answer above, I'm too slow.
