Nissa’s Chosen [Silver]

Hello fellow judges! This time we have Silver level scenario in Knowledge Pool! It means that L2+ judges should please wait until Saturday to give their thoughts.

You can find blog post here.

You’re the Head and only judge of a Standard PPTQ. August is playing against November during the third game of the final match. August controls Nissa, Sage Animist and has 2 cards in hand. August activates Nissa’s +1 ability, looks at the top card of his library for a moment, then puts it into his hand. November is about to stop him, but it’s too late. Both players immediately call a judge. August shows you that he has 2 Mountains and a Crater’s Claws in hand.

What do you do?

Since Nissa's ability does say reveal I would rule it as failure to reveal which now falls under DEC. Reveal August's hand to November she chooses one to be shuffled into his library. I would not give November any penalty

This kind of failure to reveal is DEC (failing to reveal a morph is still GRV) so we will have August reveal his hand and November will select a card to shuffle back into August's deck. Importantly, August does not repeat the Nissa activation that led to the DEC penalty.

After finding out what happened, rule that this is a nice example of the recent update to Drawing Extra Cards, specifically, a player:

“Fails to verify specific characteristics of a card with his or her opponent as required by a spell or ability before putting it into his or her hand”

Therefore, issue August a GRV - DEC, with the penalty of a Warning. The remedy would be to have the player reveal their hand and have November choose 1 card from his hand to be shuffled back in to the random portion of the deck. There is no penalty or infraction for November as he or she ended up noticing immediately, and called for a judge along with August.

Important to note - August does not repeat the action of revealing the top card of his library after the fix, and the game continues.

GPE-DEC with a warning for August.

To fix: Reveal August's hand to November who then selects a card to be shuffled into the unknown portion of the library.

Nissa's ability is done resolving - we do not resolve it again - play on.

<<Corrected from GRV-DEC to GPE-DEC opps!>>

GRV - DEC warning for AP

Fix: NAP chooses card from AP hand to be shuffled back into random portion of library.

AP resumes his turn.

I agree this is a good example,of how what would have been a GRV is now a DEC. I do want to point out that there is no such thing as GRV-DEC. I believe the previous posters meant GPE-DEC (Game Play Error - Drawing Extra Cards)

It's worth noting that this detail is actually irrelevant. Even if the active players hand was made up of three non-lands–that is, we're certain that whichever card was drawn should have gone into August's hand–the IPG does not have an avenue to downgrade the penalty or use an alternate fix.

GPE-DEC warning for August, no warning for November.

Have Aug reveal his hand and Nov choose a card from it to be shuffled back into the random portion of library.

Well done judges, time to wrap this one up!

This is a clear example from new IPG 2.3:
Game Play Error — Drawing Extra Cards
A player does any of the following:
Fails to verify specific characteristics of a card with his or her opponent as required by a spell or ability
before putting it into his or her hand

Examples
C. A player is instructed to put the top card of his library into his hand if it is a creature card and does not
reveal it before doing so.

Fix for that situation would be: August reveals his hand and November selects 1 card. This card are shuffled into the random portion of the deck. Once this remedy has been applied, August does not repeat the instruction of Nissa's ability that caused extra cards to be drawn.

Though August and November immediately called a judge, we issue Warning to August for GPE-DEC, but don't issue any penalties to November.

See you soon in the next release of Knowledge Pool!
